Soil seedbanks are natural storages of seeds often dormant within the soil of most ecosystems. Soil seedbanks play an important role in the natural environment of many ecosystems, especially in areas where anthropogenic activities have resulted to desertification in many regions of the world.

Studies on monitoring the interrelationships between soil seedbanks and aboveground vegetation are important in restoration planning process within the Wazo Hill quarry due to the fact that soil seedbanks and aboveground vegetation are highly coupled and have a strong positive feedback especially during early successional stages

This study will investigate on the significance of soil seedbanks on the species regeneration and aboveground vegetation characteristics

Soil seedbanks will be assesed by seedling emergence method and soil sampling to obtain raw data on their diversity, density and composition

Raw data on the vegetation characteristics of the quarry will be collected after Vegetation Sampling through the Transect method

The study will also investigate on the regeneration potential of indigenous plant species within the Wazo Hill quarry. The same vegetation sampling techniques will be used to obtain the raw data

Significance of seedbanks in vegetation regeneration will be examined by comparing indices obtained from the raw data of the plant species of the regenerating species with those of the soil seedbanks by using  a Paired Sample T- test

Soil sampling for Seedbank assessment

After completing the vegetation sampling that was finished on May, Our team started the second phase of our research that is Soil Sampling Soil samples were collected from three different depths within the quarry (0-10cm, 11-20cm, 21-30cm) from both the rehabilitated and the unmined regions within the quarry A total of 120 soil samples were collected and placed in a total of 6 plota within a shadehouse built within the quarry. Soil seedbanks will be assessed through seedling emergence method...

Vegetation Sampling

The first phase of the research project was completed by vegetation sampling that was done from March to June. Sampling was done for both the rehabilitated and the unmined regions. The method used for the sampling process was transect method and opportunistic sampling techniques. A total number of 58 tree species were identified and our team is currently preparing a book that will describe vegetation distribution of the quarry that will be used by other researchers and the upcoming generations

Soil seedbanks expedite natural regeneration

Soil seedbanks evoke natural regeneration of various plant species within the quarry. Studies on soil seedbanks and the interrelationship with species regeneration within the quarry are necessary for future restoration planning. This study will reveal depth of the soil layer that has maximum seedbank density so as to make a future restoration planning that will regard soil seedbanks, by using the obtained results and recommendations from the study.
